At last, in the form of gifts and donations, the funds came in. With exuberance the life of spiritual practice and the hard work of converting a farm into the residential ashrama for all children of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi began. From the end of April, 1972, the young couple and a friend, Sri Dinesha Dayalu (Dennis Hartel of Tonawanda, New York), have been working full time to make the farm a home for all sincere devotees, friends, aspirants and children of the universal Soirit who come to its door. The work both in New York and Nova Scotia continues with all faith, energy and dedication by the Grace of Rhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi who infused His devotee, Sri Arunachala Bhakta Bhagawat, with the dream of the country retreat where all would be welcome. (Permanent residence cannot be taken up until the aspirants spend a year of practice and service at the Sixth Street Center...

Venkataraman became one with His Father, Arunachala. Arunachala-Ramana glowed with spiritual brilliance shedding pure rays of beatitude and Bliss. The following is the report that we have received from Sri Jim Grant and Sri Dennis Hartel, devout children of Arunachala Ashrama about the function: Though Sri Bhagavan's advent to Arunachala was on September 1. we had to perform it on September 4 to make it more accessible to working people who thus were enabled to attend the function in large numbers. A week ahead arrived Sri Arunachala Bhakta Bhagawat and his wife, Yogamaya. Together with Arthur, Evelyn and others, from New York to Nova Scotia and joined Dennis, Darlene and Paul, who were already there...

5 Sri Yashwant Rai and his wife, enthusiastic supporters of Canada Ashrama, visited the abode of Sri Bhagavan. Though their visit was short, they felt blessed by the Master 's Grace. SEPTEMBER I — HOLY DAY We have received a letter from Sri Dennis Hartel from Arunachala Ashrama, Canada, which reads : " With the Grace of our Master Ramana, we celebrated the Advent Day of Sri Bhagavan at Arunachala from September 1 to 3. The devotees here and those who travelled from New York to attend, took this opportunity to intensify their aspiration and express their devotion to Sri Bhagavan." On Friday (Sept...

Kennedy Airport, New York on the 26th May, a huge banner with the letters Arunachala Ashrama greeted our eyes, and an enthusiastic voice cheering repeatedly "Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi Ki Jai"! could be heard, followed by a hearty chorus, which we happily joined. From that moment on, Arunachala Ashram, New York & Nova Scotia, took charge of all the arrangements. In particular, Sri Arunachala Bhakta Bhagawata, Dennis Hartel, Evelyn Kaselow and Darlene Delisi took maternal care. From: Dr. Ram Desai, Professor, Dept...

The programme began with Gayiye Ganapati. Miss Darlene Delisi welcomed the guests and read the cable of good wishes received from Sri Ramanasramam. Sri Arunachala Bhakta Bhagwata sang a Hindi poem from Peition to Rama and Dennis Hartel read its translation. Miss Doris Williamson then spoke about life at Sri Ramanasramam and the mystery of Arunachala. She also said that the first time she walked into the Temple she was greeted with the same powerful Presence of Sri Bhagavan...

We appeal again to all other Ramana Centres to bring out a family journal of their own. Let us offer many more flowers at His Holy Feet ! V J abroad, the New York Ashram at once attracted many seekers and, in course of time, became a centre for religious and spiritual guidance. In 1971, Matthew and Joan Greenblatt and Dennis Hartel joined the Ashram. Installing the picture of an Indian guru who had shed his mortal coil twenty years before in a small town in South India, in an Ashrama in New York city, undoubledly called for indomitable faith and courage. But of these Bhakta Bhagavat had aplenty...

enthusiasm and support has been constant and encouraging throughout the last ten years. The program of Sunday, 5th September began w i th slokas in praise of Ganesha. Dennis Hartel welcomed all and explained that with the completion of ten years in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, he wished to invite them to make use of the Ashrama facilities at any time. He spoke on Sri Bhagavan's Upadesa Sara and read a selection of translated verses. Copies were distributed among the 100 visitors who recited in unison...

What He wrote came true. The third verse runs: 'Arunachala, blazing Fire of Knowledge, Enfold my Mother in your light. Absorb her! What need would there be For cremation then ? Sometimes they smile with a light humour! But the last act of His loving play occurred this very night. Here and Now! How amazing to be presented with so attractive a photo of Him on a small calendar "83" card, printed in Singapore! Oh! His look in it! In silence, as if smiling, He tells: "His glance of Grace is permanently on us Here, There, and for ever". * * * * * Sri Arunachala Bhakta Bhagawata (of Arunachala Ashrama, New York), along with his family and Dennis Hartel (of Arunachala Ashrama, Nova Scotia, Canada) came to Arunachala and stayed for a couple of weeks at the Ashram. Sri Bhagawat had to go to Begusarai to attend to some family problems. Though he was eager to come back to the Ashram for holy Deepam (Nov...

The second part, longer and more important, deals with the author's later life spent mostly in the New World, as a dedicated "servitor" of Ramana Maharshi, devotion to whom fills him with perpetual peace and bliss and lifts him far above the many troubles and tribulations of earthly existence. With the help of a few enthusiastic fellow-devotees, this determined devotee from Bihar has succeeded in founding the Ramana Cen ter in New York City and a spacious Ashrama in Nova Scotia, Canada; the latter being taken care of by Dennis J. Hartel, the editor-compiler of the books under review. Like Muruganar Sri Bhagawat was first drawn to Gandhi and his movements and later to Bhagavan Ramana and his blissful Being in the Heart which is indeed the centre of the universe. And like Muruganar in his classical Tamil poetry, Sri Bhagawat in his cascading prose, pours out his prayers to and praises of Bhagavan in such profusion that the reader is left breath less and laid half asleep in mind, carried by this current...

I was four years old and being full of energy, I kept running between my father and mother, who tried to keep me sitting, but in vain. I also made faces at Bhagavan, who graciously smiled back. Years later when I visited the Arunachala Ashram in New York, Bhagavatji, Evelyn Kaselow, Dennis Hartel and others asked me what my impression of Bhagavan was as a child. I told them that, as a child, one is close to our Self and one experiences profound joy and unconditional love; one’s mind is full of satvic (pure, holy) thoughts. In a way Bhagavan was also pure and innocent like a child, therefore, it was easy for me to relate to Bhagavan as a dear friend full of love, happiness and understanding...

Bhagavan deeply impressed him and he soon returned to stay permanently under the guidance of Bhagavan. 128 January - March MOUNTAIN PATH He experienced Bhagavan’s gracious presence, the constant easy accessibility and the sense of liberation in the Ashram. Dennis Hartel who was responsible for compiling Sri Reddy’s My Reminiscences, quoted in the latest The Maharshi bi-monthly Reddy’s statement: “When I had observed Bhagavan closely for some time, I discovered that he would never openly say that he was our Guru and we were his disciples; in fact, he would sometimes say things that sounded contrary to this. But for us close devotees there was never a doubt that he was our Guru. He loved us like a mother, protected us like a father, guided us like a teacher and moved with us like a friend...

books	My Reminiscences
Jan Balarama Reddiar He first came to the Maharshi in the mid 1930s and, from those early years until his final days in 1995, he repeatedly marvelled at his rare good fortune of enjoying many years of close proximity to the Sage of Arunachala. Balarama Reddy had always humbly refused to write down his reminiscences. After decades of innumerable requests he finally consented to dictate his experiences to Dennis Hartel of Arunachala Ashrama New York and Nova Scotia (Canada) in September of 1993. These notes had been gone through in full, corrected and approved for printing by Sri Reddy himself. With great pleasure, in the year of the one hundredth anniversary of Sri Ramana Maharshi’s advent at Arunachala, we publish these valuable notes in book form...

arayanai nallur Souvenir This was perhaps the most memorable event of the 1996 Centenary Celebrations of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi’s Advent to Arunachala. There was an elaborate two-day function comprising rituals, devotional music, classical music and spiritual discourses. The sacred pilgrimage to Arunachala undertaken by a group of seventy-four devotees was led by Sri Dennis Hartel of Canada. Travelling from all corners of India and abroad they gathered in Madurai on Thursday, August 29, 1996 where they boarded the Pandyan Express from Madurai for the three day journey to Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai. Details of the yatra took months to plan for the devotees of Ramana Kendra Madurai...

He wore only a loin cloth but was a sovereign master (svaraat). To be deposited in what we consider to be HIS Ashrama in the Western Hemisphere, to dedicate our lives to the ideal of the Ashrama, and to have the warm friendship and support of those who have no other ideal, no other goal but to realize the truth as taught by Sri Bhagavan, is for us the greatest gift of grace in which we find an incomparable wealth of inspiration and joy. What more is there for us to do but to strive with all our strength and might to realize the truth of our Master’s teachings...

When requested to write he would say that he mostly sat silently meditating in Bhagavan’s presence and never took notes of what he heard or saw. Balarama Reddy had always humbly refused to write down his reminiscences. After decades of innumerable requests, he finally consented to dictate his experiences to Dennis Hartel of Arunachala Ashrama New York and Nova Scotia (Canada) in September 1993. I am ever indebted to him for giving me the opportunity to soar high in the limitless expanse of śivapremarasam pervading the nectarine torrents of devotion, overflowing the pages of this book. This translation was only possible by the unfathomable glory of Bhagavān śri Ramaṇa, by whose Grace the mute becomes eloquent (mâkam karoti vācālam) and vice versa. Over a decade ago, śri Dennis Hartel of Aruṇācala ırama asked me to translate the stories of the Peria Purāṇam into. book	The Guiding Presence
With this ideal prevailing, Arunachala Ashrama was not inclined to take a firm outward step to expand its activities. Nevertheless, this ideal did attract – and still does attract – a core of serious sadhakas who realise that to experience the Self, as taught by the Maharshi, is the sole purpose of human existence.
